Ontario CU’s Rally to Support Youth Bursary
July 19, 2018 – Oakville, Ontario – Several Ontario credit unions participated in an in-branch campaign to raise funds supporting the CU Succeed Youth Bursary available to post-secondary credit union students in Ontario. Their efforts raised $18,250 which complements the $88,500 raised by the Golf Classic held in June. The total of $106,500 will be go towards the 2019 CU Succeed Youth Bursary pool.
Participating fundraising campaign credit unions included Alterna Savings, Healthcare and Municipal Employees’ Credit Union, Kawartha, Luminus Financial, Momentum, PACE, Sudbury and Your Neighbourhood Credit Union.
Special kudos to Alterna Savings who really got behind the fun this year and raised a whopping $11,000! Some examples of the innovative ways they raised funds include Bramalea branch raffled a Father’s Day basket. The Contact Centre Team hosted a community BBQ. Lakeshore branch in Etobicoke held their Grilled Cheese Challenge 2018 with all proceeds to the CUSYB. CEO Rob Paterson commented “Our team was happy to support and had a lot of fun doing it!”
Additionally, several credit unions were sponsors at the Golf Classic: Alterna Savings, DUCA, Meridian, PACE, Comtech Fire, FirstOntario, Frontline, IC Savings, LiUNA, PenFinancial, Tandia, WFCU Credit Union and Your Credit Union.
Board Chair Dan Coldwell from PACE commented, “Ontario credit unions and our valued corporate sponsors contributed to a record amount raised for the bursary program. On behalf of the students who will benefit from this funding I extend a sincere thank you.”
This year’s CU Succeed Bursary applications closed June 30th with the review process underway. A total of $75,000 is available. OCUF created the bursary program in 2016 to assist post-secondary students with their vocational, technical and academic pursuits. In the first two years, $111,000 was awarded to 78 students.
