69 Exceptional Students Share $75,000 CU Succeed Youth Bursaries
Oakville, Ontario – July 28, 2021 – A total of 69 outstanding students from 28 Ontario credit unions were recognized with a CU Succeed Youth Bursary ranging from $1,000 to $3,000. Students were adjudicated on four criteria, the two main ones being financial need and involvement and giving back to their communities. Every year the quality of the applications increase as does the need. As one reviewer commented, “the future is bright!”
This is the sixth year Ontario Credit Union Foundation (OCUF) has presented awards. Over this time, we have distributed $436,000 to 327 post-secondary students.
We received a record number of applications this year, more than double last year, a reflection of more member credit unions promoting the bursary program, and the impact COVID has had on students not being able to have the same summer employment as in past years.
“OCUF is very pleased to see the growth of the bursary program. Each year, more and more Credit Unions have seen value in promoting the program to their youth members. We are especially grateful to our Credit Union Bursary Boosters, who raised over $11,000 for the program, and to our many corporate supporters who sponsor the Golf Classic which is our primary source of funds for the bursary,” said Board Chair Liisa Woolley.
Board Director Chris Inniss commented, “this was my first year adjudicating applications and I was so impressed with the number of amazing young people who balance their academic pursuits with their community involvement. Some of their personal challenges and family situations make me proud that we can make a small difference in their lives.”
The 30th Golf Classic is happening September 20, 2021 at Cherry Downs Golf Club if you would like to support the bursary program as a sponsor or a golfer, please visit our website for details.
We congratulate our 2021 bursary recipients and wish them a successful school year.
